What is the Facing Cancer Together program?
Angel Foundation offers education and support at no cost through its Facing Cancer Together program to help families with children aged 5-18 facing a parental cancer diagnosis. This program helps participants gain lasting skills that forge resilience and strengthen the whole family so they can thrive in the face of cancer’s profound uncertainties with renewed hope and meaning.
Who qualifies for the Facing Cancer Together program?
Minnesota families with children aged 5-18 who are facing a parental cancer diagnosis. The adult living with a cancer diagnosis need not be participating in Angel Foundation’s Financial Assistance program.
How often does Facing Cancer Together program meet?
Facing Cancer Together provides activities throughout the year. Our education and support series is offered twice a year; there are Saturday retreat days; a three-day Kids Kamp in August for kids who have a parent or grandparent with cancer; a summer fun night for Facing Cancer Together families; and teen outreach events once a month. All programs are offered at no cost to participants.
What do parents learn?
Parents learn how to open up healthy lines of communication with their children; how to talk honestly about their diagnosis; and to be aware of different behaviors that may manifest in their child.
What do children learn?
In a safe, compassionate environment, children learn age-appropriate definitions, and focus on topics such as change, feelings, and self-care. They learn that they cannot “catch” cancer, did not cause the cancer, that it is ok to cry, and they learn, through the benefit of peer support, that they do not have to go through this alone. They also learn healthy coping skills.
